ON LOOP by UNIVERSAL

On Loop by Universal is a participatory and site-specific installation that builds on the notion that evolution is nature’s very own trial-and-error design method. It aims to examine the role of failure in the creative process through an iterative and collective design process.

ON VIEW THROUGH OCT 31

On Loop invites visitors to contribute their own design to the installation by marking and drawing a plexiglass. Visitors are encouraged to create with a free-flow mindset where a perceived error can positively contribute to the overall design. After 10 days, the plexiglass in the "loop" are archived on the shelf for viewing and a new set of plexi is introduced to the table.

WORKSHOPS

Throughout the month of October, A/D/O and Universal will host a series of workshops around On Loop. These workshops will be a combination of mixed media and physical design. Sign up below.

OCT 02 |

I / CRAFT: WORKSHOP WITH BKLYN CLAY.

This workshop will consist of creating hand-built clay cylinders through the process of surface design on clay slabs with simple tools. Become part of the production line and contribute to forms that will be finished in our October 16 workshop.

OCT 09 |

II / FOOD: WORKSHOP WITH LAILA GOHAR.

This workshop, led by Laila Gohar, will consist of using food as both an artistic medium and a tool for communication, exploring the nature of human interaction by creating a convivial, multi-sensory edible workshop.

OCT 16 |

III / CRAFT: WORKSHOP WITH BKLYN CLAY.

This workshop will refine clay work started in our October 2nd Clay Workshop by decorating and finishing the pieces that were created through two participatory sessions. Attending both Clay Workshops is encouraged but not required.

OCT 22 |

IV / FOOD: WORKSHOP WITH EMILIE BALTZ.

Inspired by the game of exquisite corpse and the cyclical nature of fermentation, this workshop led by Emilie Baltz is a generative pickling exercise. Participants will learn the basics of fermentation and leave with a jar of co-created pickles.

OCT 23 |

V / DRAWING & SOUND: WORKSHOP WITH JUAN MIGUEL MARIN.

This workshop, led by Juan Miguel Marin, will consist of a brief introduction to Automatism, the technique of automatic drawing. Participants will partake in individual and group drawing sprints such as drawing with your eyes closed or drawing in response to beats.

OCT 29 |

VI / FUTURING: WORKSHOP WITH CHARLOTTE MCCURDY.

Drawing from a deck of cards about climate fortune, participants will gain skills in strategic foresight by hacking, editing, physically manipulating and recombining the cards iteratively around the On Loop table to generate unexpected scenarios of that future. This workshop is led by Charlotte McCurdy, an interdisciplinary designer and researcher at NEW INC.

OCT 30 |

VII / TEACHABLE SYSTEMS: WORKSHOP WITH IBM.

This workshop, led by Research Scientist Jonathan Connell of IBM, will explore ways to develop complex motion patterns with a robot. Using the robot's ability to recognize certain classes of objects with its camera, participants will teach it how to dance.
