To Our Community

Following four years as a cornerstone of the New York creative community, during which it has grown into a global network of designers and thinkers, A/D/O has ended operations and permanently closed. Although sad to say goodbye, we are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished in this relatively short time.

"A/D/O was launched by MINI to empower the design community to explore creative solutions to improve urban life and it has always been a communal effort," said A/D/O managing director Nate Pinsley. "We are profoundly grateful to our Greenpoint neighbors, the international creative community, and our Brooklyn-based team and partners who made this unusual endeavor into something truly unique. Although we've made the difficult decision to close our doors, we’re confident the idea which has permeated everything we‘ve done – the belief that good design can change the world - will continue to inspire everyone who has been our part of our journey."

Among many highlights of the exhibitions at A/D/O wasWave. Particle. Duplex. created by Studio Swine in 2018.

Following its inauguration with a three-day design festival in early 2017, A/D/O has mounted 39 installations and exhibitions by leading designers like Studio Swine, Fernando Mastrangelo, Studio INI and Universal; and collaborated with over 300 designers throughout the world. These efforts have drawn hundreds of visitors to the space and been featured in some of the most respected design publications. Working closely with these designers has developed lasting connections and helped catapult careers.

“A/D/O was a really incredible experiment in a new kind of creative space that operated in some ways like a college campus, but also very much in the professional world – bringing tech startups together with great design, crafts, industry, and conceptual debate at a beautiful space in Greenpoint. It really helped redefine what design could be and could do,” said Studio Swine cofounders Alex Groves and Azusa Murakami, whose six-month residency in the space resulted in the Wave. Particle. Duplex. exhibition.

Studio INI founder Nassia Inglessis, creator of the Urban Imprint kinetic installation in the A/D/O courtyard, said: “A/D/O was formed to be a point of gravitational pull for everything innovative, challenging and thought provoking. Everyone in A/D/O's team rendered it such by having the unique ability to draw in and work alongside artists, designers, engineers, architects, innovators – creatives of undefined and multifaceted nature like myself – demonstrating unwavering faith in their process and their talent.”

Urban Imprint by Studio Ini invited visitors to alter their surroundings with their movements during Summer 2019.

As a creative space for design-minded audiences in New York and internationally, A/D/O hosted over 400 public programs, including workshops, talks and lectures by many of the leading global design minds, from Alice Rawsthorn to Yves Behar and Laila Gohar to nARCHITECTS; and contributed to the field of design research and writing through its online Journal, as well as ambitious research initiatives investigating critical issues of our time in partnership with top design curators like Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun and Jane Withers.

“I had the pleasure of speaking at one of A/D/O’s first events when it opened in January 2017,” said Rawsthorn, author of Design as an Attitude. “The building was barely finished, but I was thrilled to discover so many New Yorkers converging on the space through the snow, and to see how excited they were to have a forum to share their ideas, insights and enthusiasm for design. A/D/O has been an engaging and energetic force in the New York design scene in the last three years, which will be greatly missed.”

The Spirit of the City installation by UVA drew large crowds during NYCxDesign 2018.

Rule of Thirds, a restaurant within A/D/O by Sunday Hospitality Group that opened to much fanfare in February 2020, plans to continue operating within the space. We wish them the very best of luck over the coming months.

URBAN-X by MINI, another pillar of the brand’s extended innovation practice, will continue its mission as the accelerator for startups reimagining city life. URBAN-X operations will continue virtually in response to social distancing requirements until a new physical space is secured while continuing to serve entrepreneurs building forward-thinking companies for the 21st century.

The A/D/O team would like to thank you for being part of our community and our journey.
