Introducing New Reality Co.

The second designer-in-residence at A/D/O is New Reality Co., a pioneer in immersive, haptically-enhanced story-telling. Led by Milica Zec and Winslow Porter, they are a recipient of an Unreal Dev Grant on the strength of their virtual reality experiences Giant and Tree, on display at A/D/O throughout their residency. Giant, part of the New Frontiers selection at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, which subjects visitors to the experience of a family trapped in an active war zone; and Tree, featured at the Tribeca Film Festival and at Cannes in 2017, in which the viewer experiences a full growth-cycle in a threatened rainforest.

While residents at A/D/O, New Reality Co. will produce an augmented reality experience making up the third part of the trilogy. It will include both individual and communal aspects as it follows the evolving viewpoint of a young girl — as with Giant, a subject drawn from Zec’s childhood experiences in Serbia. As with their prior work, the forthcoming work will not be confined to the visual horizon of the headset, but will involve for all the senses, making use of heating, cooling, vibration, and scent. Combining intricate storytelling and new technologies, New Reality Co. will use their residency at A/D/O to explore the artist’s power to celebrate the universality of collective life, appealing to the “common sense” of what it means to be human.
